Q&A: Black Lake Botanicals
Black Lake Botanicals is a Portland-based natural wellness store, specializing in herbal medicinal tinctures, salves, liquors, body & bath oils, candles and aromatherapy. Find out more about them via their website.
Q: When did you start your business?A: 2014. During my senior year of college, which is why the business was placed on the back-burner until now.
Q: What made you want to create these products?
A: Healthcare can be expensive. And often times, doctors treat symptoms but not the cause of the problem. I have been interested in holistic health and wellness for many years. This led me to my botanical research into using herbs and other medicinal plants for home remedies.
Q: Not to give anything away, but what is your process to create these products?
A: Herbal alchemy is a scientific process. Each potion combines botany, chemistry, and an understanding of the cycles of the natural world. When harvesting and processing herbs, we incorporate magick and the astrological movement of the stars and planets, and the cycles of the earth’s seasons to ensure the highest nutrition and quality of the product.
Q: What makes your products unique and special? Why should someone buy your products?
A: Black Lake Botanicals is a business that is working for a non-toxic society as well as environmental sustainability, producing natural remedies that nourish our communities rather than harm them. We honor plant communities through conscious cultivation, ethical wild-crafting and sustainable harvesting. All our products are organic and cruelty free. All of our packaging is minimal and eco-friendly, reusable, and recyclable.
Q: How does creating these products make you feel? Why is it important in your life to create this?
A: Black Lake Botanicals believes in the necessity of self-care and community responsibility for cultivating our own well-being. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege and should be made accessible to all people. Herbal medicine is the people’s medicine, and we believe that everyone should have access to this knowledge. Along with promoting our products, we also promote recipes and information about the ingredients that we use, so that others can have access to this knowledge and make their own herbal remedies.
Q: Where are you from? What is your background and personal history?
A: I’m originally from Southeast Idaho, but I spent the last thirteen years calling the Pacific Northwest home.
I have been studying botany, alchemy, and herbal medicine for the past ten years. I have a Bachelors of Environmental Science, and am a Certified Wilderness First Responder.
Q: What is your “day” job? What do you do in your spare time?
A: I am the Wildlife Intern at the local non-profit organization Oregon Wild. I work for the protections of wildlife, specifically predators such as gray wolves. When I’m not working in the office, I’m out adventuring in the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest or volunteering for a variety of community-based organizations. My hobbies include hiking, traveling, tree climbing, rock climbing, canyoneering, white water rafting, and practicing wilderness and herbal medicine.
Q: Why did you chose LiveEdge to sell your products?
A: LiveEdge meets our goal of striving for local business and eco-conscious practices.
Q: Who is the customer you see using/buying your products?
A: Our customers are concerned with holistic health of their bodies as well as the planet. We hope our customers choose to support businesses who demonstrate responsibility toward community health, local economic sustainability, and ecological integrity.
Q: What is your special this month?
A: Our special is your choice of a free Lavender and Lemon Balm bath tea sache or a four-pack heart-shaped sampler of our Peppermint Chamomile bathing salt blend, with any purchase.
